THEY WEREN'T RUSTY: Lancers' Schindler, Fernandez named to NPSL Rust Belt Conference XI

Rochester Lancers defender and captain Jake Schindler and midfielder Lukas Fernandes were named to the Rust Belt Conference XI, the National Premier Soccer League announced.

Schindler an anchor of Lancers' indoor and outdoor teams in the Major Indoor Soccer League and Major Arena Soccer League indoors and the NPSL outdoors, has moved up the list of regular season matches in club history.

He has played 133 regular season games, good for second place on the team’s all-time playing list. Charlie Mitchell, a former team captain who performed in at least 152 games (his full total of games could not be determined from the 1969 season) in nine seasons for the original Lancers (American Soccer League and North American Soccer League) is the all-time leader. Jim Pollihan, another former captain, is third at 130 regular season matches, and the club’s all-time leader in NASL regular season appearances. Francisco Escos is next at 127, Frank Odoi is fifth (124).

The 33-year-old Schindler was a standout at Irondequoit High School.

Fernandes, 23, a graduate of Churchville-Chili High School, scored a couple of vital goals for the Lancers this past season. He converted a late game penalty kick to lift Rochester into a 1-1 home draw with Cleveland SC May 21.

Cleveland SC has qualified for the NPSL final four.
